LinkedIn Profile Tips for South Africans — Get Found by Recruiters in 2025
LinkedIn has over 14 million South African users. Recruiters and hiring managers search it daily. Most profiles are incomplete and invisible to search. These changes will get you found.
Your headline is your most important real estate
The default headline LinkedIn sets is your current job title. Change it immediately. Your headline should describe what you do, who you help, and your value — not just your title.
Bad: "Software Developer at Telkom"
Good: "Full Stack Developer | React & Node | Building scalable e-commerce platforms | Open to senior roles"
Include the keywords recruiters search for. If you are in finance: "Chartered Accountant | IFRS | Financial Reporting | FP&A | Cape Town".
The About section is your pitch
Write in first person. Three paragraphs maximum. Start with your strongest professional statement, describe your track record with specific achievements, and end with what you are looking for.
South African recruiters spend fewer than 10 seconds deciding whether to contact a candidate. Your first two sentences need to tell them exactly why you are worth their time.
Skills — add all 50
LinkedIn allows up to 50 skills. Most people add fewer than 10. Recruiters filter searches by skills. If you do not have a skill listed, you do not appear in that search.
Add every technical skill, soft skill, and tool you use regularly. Prioritise the skills that appear most frequently in your target job descriptions.
Endorsements and recommendations
Ask five people to endorse your top three skills this week. Endorsed skills rank higher in recruiter searches. A recommendation from a former manager or colleague is worth 10 times more than any other profile element — reach out to two people and offer to write one for them first.
Your profile photo and banner
Profiles with photos receive 21 times more views. Use a professional headshot — not a party photo, not a group photo, not a logo. Good lighting, clear background, and you looking directly at the camera.
Add a banner image that reinforces your professional identity. A simple design with your name, role, and key skill is far better than the default blue gradient LinkedIn provides.
Activity matters
Post or comment at least twice a week. Share an industry article with your view on it. Comment on posts by people in your target companies. Recruiters check activity to assess whether a candidate is engaged and current.
Turn on Open to Work
Make your profile searchable by recruiters. Go to your profile, click the "Open to" button, select "Finding a new job," choose your preferences, and set visibility to "Recruiters only." This makes you discoverable to recruiters searching for your skills without broadcasting to your current employer.
